V- Monologues Play in Nigeria
The Kudirat Initiative for Democracy (KIND) is showing the “V-monologues: The Nigerian Story” throughout the month of March, as part of charity initiative.
Clearly, a remake of the American version, “The Vagina Monologues”, “V-monologues: The Nigerian Story” is not a total knock off, as there are some twists to this new version. The American version, written by Eve Ensler, was a catalogue of various monolgues told by various women. Every monologue somehow relates to the vagina, be it through sex, love, rape, menstruation, masturbation, birth, orgasm, or simply as an organ of the femal body. A recurring theme throughout the piece is the vagina as a tool of female empowerment, and the ultimate embodiment of individuality. However, the Nigerian version is a bit differnt. The play is aimed at raising awareness about various aspects of violence women and girls face in Nigeria. Furthermore, it includes males.
The play stars Kate Henshaw-Nuttall, Ego Ogbaro, Carol Adoghe-King, Ireti Doyle, Kemi Lala Akindoju, Ayo Adunni Orobiyi, Bimbo Emmanuel, Kenneth Uphopho, Kunle Adeyoola, Paul Alumona and Sola Roberts Iwaotan.
